Mairangi Bay Pump Station

The new Mairangi Bay Pump Station, part of a $22.5 million development to protect local beaches and reserves, combines high-performance infrastructure with thoughtful architectural design. Perforated aluminium screens on the south elevation, featuring two local Pohutukawa trees, cover over 35 sqm and are finished in a Metwood Aged Copper coating that mimics the natural patina of aged Corten steel. This finish delivers the industrial character of weathered steel without the maintenance challenges, while aluminium panels with the ‘Moonscape’ pattern and Insol Solaris 200 louvres tie the design together across all elevations.

Metwood’s powder-coated solutions, complemented by Insol’s technical expertise, allow the pump station to serve its purpose while blending into the surrounding environment. The gently ascending louvres and perforated screens provide both functionality and aesthetic appeal, demonstrating how critical infrastructure can contribute to a visually engaging public space. The project shows that durability, performance, and architectural ambition can flow seamlessly together.
